| Abstract: | Research concentrating on a particular area in Zambia (Mwinilunga district) and study of the 'school-leaver problem' in some depth made it possible to a) conduct a diachronic study, following a sample of Grade 7 pupils through until several years after leaving school, and b) study at a micro level the interacting influences of geographical, social, econimic and educational factors. In this way a more comprehensive picture was obtained of pupils in a rural setting as well as their situation after leaving school. More generally, it offered valuable opportunity for gaining insight into the functioning of education in a specific rural environment. In this paper: first a general indication of the opportunities for further education or empolyment opn to Grade 7 leavers, and then an analysis of what happened to a sample of 126 pupils in Mwinilunga, who sat for their examination in November 1974.
