| Abstract: | The Kerkennah Islands of Tunisia can be described as an oasis in the middle of a large wet desert. The sea that surrounds Kerkennah is like a desert, because it is so shallow that it must be treated more like land than like sea. The author explores the parallels between Kerkennah and a proper land oasis in a number of areas, particularly in terms of the physical limitations (water shortage, geographical isolation), and the social-economic system. The analysis presented is based on the Kerkenni's own perception of their situation. Ref. |
