Abstract: | The Ujamaa policy is an example of attempts to stimulate rural development while, at the same time, focussing on the conservation of a more egalitarian type of social structure. Background and achievements of the Ujamaa policy are discussed in this article. This policy has been successful mainly in the underpopulated areas of lesser potential, primarily the southern parts of Tanzania. In more thriving and densely-populated areas, Ujamaa does not seem to offer significant solutions to the most pressing current problems. Tables; ref. |
