Abstract:Presents methods of measuring and valuation of the spatial development of modernizing phenomena in Uganda, such as presence of roads, administrative function, mission posts, post offices, etc. The empirical findings are laid down in three maps which illustrate the distribution of modernized areas resp. in 1921, 1948, and 1970. The conclusions drawn from these patterns of distribution indicate an increasing polarity as modernization grows. In order to gain a more specific picture of modernization in the different parts, 22 data of modernizing phenomena for each of the districts were collected and compared mutually. The point made here is that there is not only a great diversity of modernization at a local level, mainly between urban and rural areas, but as much at a national level, largely between areas in the south and southeast, and areas in the north and west.
