| Abstract: | Eastern Nigerians in town live in a dual system: they belong not only to the town they live in, but also to the village they have come from. In this paper evidence of this dual involvement has been given in terms of residence, economic support, and social field. The author puts forward that the importance of urban-rural ties in Eastern Nigeria is exceptional and suggests the following reasons for it: 1. The tightly controlled land by localized lineages; 2. The cohesion of the rural community, 3. The high degree of rural development, by which the gap between urbanites and ruralites is reduced; 4. The ease of communication between town of residence and area of origin. Parts of the article: Rural emigration - A Town: Enugu - A working life in town - Residence - Urban income and rural property - The urban dweller's social field - Interpretation - The comparative perspective.
