| Abstract: | An analysis of the social relations among neighbourhood, groups of Swahili people, to discern the social structure of a small town in West Tanzania. Three neighbourhood, groups are considered in a different spatial perspective: 1. the primary neighbourhood group, made up by 3-5 households; 2. The secondary group, including several primary groups living on one street; 3. The tertiary group or an Islamic parish group, made up by 3-9 secondary groups. For each of the groups the author describes the patterns of settlement, the social relations, the social function, and some social characteristics. Further an attempt is made to prove that the Swahili value system concerned with the social structure of the Swahili group is maintained by the social relations of various neighbourhood groups.
