Abstract: | Text in Portuguese. The sea has been a major influence in the historical development of Cabindan coastal societies. Its products were essential in village economies, it has figured largely in belief systems and control of the sea and the trade which these stimulated contributed to the growth of chiefly authority. In the nineteenth century the position of Cabinda as a maritime society bound it inextricably to the foreign, colonial sector of the economy. The article is a Portuguese translation of a paper presented at an international conference on 'Africa and the Sea', Aberdeen University, 1983. Notes, sum. in English. |
