Abstract: | Main objective was to examine the reasons why history as a secondary school subject is relatively unpopular in the Western State of Nigeria. It is placed seventh out of eleven subjects. The study was carried out through a survey of teacher opinion. The purpose was to provide an empirical understanding to curriculum development in history. Survey data consisted of 32 teachers drawn from a stratified random sample of 30 grammar schools in the State and 39 teacher-trainees pursuing both the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Bachelor of Education courses. The findings established the validity of the oft-repeated educational dictum that it is easier to learn 'from the known to the unknown'. Subjects consistently gave higher rankings to local historical topics. Ref., tables. |
