Abstract: | Description and review of one recent innovatory course in research methods undertaken in East Africa, at the Institute of Adult Studies of the University of Nairobi. To an already varied programme of activities of the Institute was added in 1971 a major new element in the form of a 9-month Diploma course in Adult Education, designed for people engaged in, or intending to undertake some form of professional adult education activity. After cautiously feeling its way with rather small student numbers during the first two courses, the Institute accepted 15 participants for the 1973-74 course. The main concern of this paper is the experience of this group in following an Applied Research Methods course. Sections: Limitations of 'academic' research - The Institute of Adult Studies, Kikuyu - The Applied Research Methods course (first term; second term; third term) - A relevant learning experience - A student comment - Three examples of research projects - Summary.
