Abstract:The most important part civics play in King's College - a Government Secondary Grammar School - is to provide opportunities for a realistic approach to character training and for preparing the boys for the part they will soon have to play in a self-governing Nigeria. One 45-minute period a week is devoted to civics. Subjects range from discussions of practical school problems to the part an individual should play in the Nigerian Community, the principles of democracy, the Nigerian constitution etc. A Student's Council is an example of active citizenship. See p. 54-59: Okunni, L.O. The student's council at King's college, Lagos.
