Abstract: | An exploratory approach, also to the more general question of how people learn to behave like nationals. A report on 'some recent statements by educators and political leaders about the national mission of an African university' is followed by 'a schematic outline of possible future research on the interaction between an African university and its national community, indicating some of the ways to describe the social setting in which Africans learn roles relevant to nationhood' and 'a brief summary of 3 types of knowledge which seem useful in nation building'. In conclusion some reservations are stated 'about what can be learned in universities lest too heavy and unrealistic a burden be placed on a single institution in the creation of a national society'. |
