| Abstract: | Harold Jowitt, who was made Director of a new Native Education Department in 1927, aimed to build up self respect and self dependence amongst rural Africans. To achieve this, he trained a special kind of teacher: the Jeanes Teacher. The article describes the training and effectiveness of Jeanes Teachers and home demonstrators (Jeanes women) and shows that the basic idea of the Jeanes movement, real unimposed self-help, was not developed.
