| Abstract: | The vast majority of Indians in South Africa are landless, semi-skilled and unskilled workers. They have shared this position with Africans and Coloureds, yet it is only in the last thirty years that they are engaged in common political and economic action. What are the factors that have delayed their coming together? One of the reasons lies in the dynamics of Afro-Indian relations and an important and neglected feature of these dynamics is the system of indentured labour which spawned the Indian South Africans.
