Abstract:Zimbabwe's history requires the specification and periodization of the broad social and political forces set in motion by the struggle of ordinary men and women against efforts by the settler state to recast Ndebele and Shona economic and social organization in new forms more amenable to the needs of capital. The history of Zimbabwe is not just a tale of a nationalist struggle, but is also a history of civil disobedience by peasants and the landless in the 1950s, of widespread opposition to the British proposals before the Pearce Commission, of peasants in the TTLs supporting the guerillas, and of people's councils in no-go areas. There was a popular, often spontaneous element to the struggle and in many instances the people took the organised leadership by surprise. All too little of this history finds expression in the new textbooks written recently for Zimbabwean schools. Instances of these books are discussed. Notes.
