Abstract: | Possibilities of the interplay and crossfertilisation between cultural ideals and traditional ways of thought are explored, taking the Chewa, a Bantu tribe in Eastern Central Africa, as point of departure. The authors argue that the Chewa have ideals classifiable into two broad categories, namely, epistemological and ethical. Although these ideals feed on each other, the epistemological is prior and serves as the basis of the ethical. The analysis is derived from proverbs in Chichewa, the language spoken by the Chewa. - Notes. |
