Abstract:Since Ethiopian history is to a great extent the history of a Christian country its course can be depicted to a certain degree by maps which shows the distribution of churches and the periods of their foundations. The present paper gives such an overall picture of the geographical situation of churches, tabulated according to foundation dates and to patron saints. Such information provides important insights into certain aspects of the history and geography of Ethiopia: as to the incorporation of a particular region into the Empire, the religious composition of the population of an area, the size of a parish, the preference for a certain church patron saint, and even, in some cases, the population density of an area.
