Abstract:Under the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar has a separate judicial system with its own Chief Justice, judges, magistrates and courts. Very few lawyers are aware of this system. This lack of vital information is, to the author's opinion, owing to a number of reasons. The major responsibility for this lack of information, however, even among the members of the learned profession, falls squarely on the Zanzibar judiciary. Heretofore hardly anything has been done to disseminate information on the system. The author seizes here the opportunity to describe the rich and most interesting development of the history of Zanzibar's court system. - Notes.
