Abstract:Examines the causes of the unrest during the 1940s in the Witzieshoek Reserve in the north-eastern corner of the Orange Free State, culminating in a clash with the police on 27 November 1950. It will be show that the root of the problem was inadequate planning and poor execution of a development policy, which resulted in a sense of deprivation and powerlessness among the population. Instead of describing events in the order in which they occured, the reasons for the increasing confrontation between the people and the authorities are discussed. Bibliogr., notes.
