Abstract: | The output of creative writing on the Nigerian Civil War has been flowing steadily since it ended in January 1970. No single year in the new decade and after passed by without revelations of fresh talent or the resurgence of older writers who had to get the Biafran experience 'off their chest'. The author gives a survey of 'witness literature', civil war poetry and drama, and fictionalized history and novels of the 'chronicle' variety. As far as the future of Nigerian writing is concerned, it will probably take another generation to come to terms fully with the past, be it politically or artistically. Notes, ref. |
