Abstract:In April 1958 an uprising of some 7000 women began in Bamenda province, which lasted for more than a year. It was an example of an old institution called Anlu, which traditionally operated to punish offenders of certain 'moral' rules, being converted (with the aid of 2 male instigaters) into an organization of political pressure, the major objective of which was to unseat the party in power and vote in the opposition party in the January 1959 elections. The change in form and function of Anlu is the primary concern of this paper.
