Abstract:First this article describes the causes and circumstances of coups d'état in Africa. Then it evaluates the ensuing military regimes. Conclusion: a military regime, prolonged or recurrent, is more likely to generate a sharpening of the pragmatic political skills of the military than it is to contribute to the evolution of a civil and political culture holding out the long-term prospects of stability.
