| Abstract: | Some of the states of the Eastern Niger Delta, as well as the Efik state of Calabar on the Cross River, experienced political upheavals in the second half of the nineteenth century. The pioneer work on these states - K. Onwuka Dike, 'Trade and politics in the Niger Delta, 1830-1885' (Oxford, 1956) - characterized these disturbances of the status quo as 'slave revolts'. Object of this paper is to review this aspect of Nigerian history and to suggest a revised conclusion. The author discusses and reinterprets, in the main, the old data, and does not expose fresh detailed information. Notes. |
