Abstract: | The article examines some factors by which the passing of mwamiship in Burundi differs from the military take over in other African countries. By the time it was overthrown, the monarchy had led the country into economic stagnation and nothing positive was done to ease the growing tensions between Hutu and Tutsi. These tensions, the part of the crown in them, and the political development, which finally led to the downfall of the mwami, are treated at length. At the end there are reflections about some future imponderables, such as the future of mwamiship, the future of Hutu-Tutsi relations, and Burundi's relations with Rwanda. |
