| Abstract: | This paper highlights the essential elements of the role of the foreign sector in the economic development of the less developed countries (LDCs) with emphasis where appropriate on Africa and Nigeria. Some of the factors important in the relationship between trade and national development are explored. While the theoretical logic of the gains from trade is unimpeachable, the LDCs seen to have derived little of such gains despite their strong orientation to foreign trade. Their energetic efforts to bring about a new order between the developed and the less developed countries have thus met with scant success. - Tab. |
