Abstract:The main features of the Yoruba and of the Islamic system of marriage are highlighted with a view to quantifying the extent of the adoption of the latter by Yoruba Muslims. Thus the extent to which Yoruba Muslims have relinquished the Yoruba for the Islamic system of marriage is examined, as well as the question of whether it is the Islamic system per se among Yoruba Muslims today or a synthesis of the Yoruba and the Islamic.
