| Abstract: | Over the last decade or so, a great deal of comment, by both academics and political leaders, on the role of Zimbabwean workers in the development of nationalism, has expressed a very negative view of their contribution. This examination of the relationship between the labour movement and nationalism in Bulawayo, one of Zimbabwe's two major industrial centres, in the period 1945-1963, shows that postwar industrial militancy provided the basis for the emergence of the modern Zimbabwean nationalist movement.
