Abstract: | The growth of black working-class organisations from the early 1970's, the rise of Black Consciousness organisations and ideology from the late 1960's, and the resurgence of organisations of a non-racial, 'progressive' reorientation over the last four or five years have marked the last decade and a half of black political and economic life within South Africa. While these initiatives cannot ultimately be separated - they have engaged with, built on and changed, and generally interacted with each other - there are areas of cultural activity where their various ideologies and goals can be recognised. The author examines the burgeoning of literary and general cultural initiatives during the period of organisational growth: Black Consciousness as expressed by writers and performers - Non-racialism, within Black Consciousness and 'popular democratic' nonracial organisations - Worker plays, which all, to a large extent, reflect and comment on life on the factory floor - Conclusions.
