Abstract:Against the background of the colonial government's effort in Kenya, aided by the missionaries, to use education as an instrument of dominance, this paper examines the attempts by the Kikuyu to use education as an instrument of resistance to colonialism. The author gives an overview of the history of the Kikuyu Independent Schools Movement from its start in 1929 until 1952. It is the view of this paper that the independent schools and their organisers were drawn into the mainstream of the 'mau mau' uprising largely because of their determination to continue to retain control of their schools which the government was equally determined to take away.
