| Abstract: | Describes the Temne political history to provide a clear example of the ubiquitous characteristics of the Mande pervasive influences on the ongoing process of state building in Africa. Basically, Mande influence over time profoundly conditioned the development of Temne political, commercial, military, and artistic traditions, while Temne language, family organization and agricultural practices persisted. Syncretisms of Mande and non-Mande institutions, such as Mande-type kingship sanctioned by non-Mande secret societies, also took place. Map, notes. |
