| Abstract: | Deals briefly with the response of the Akamba, a Bantu tribe in Kenya, to the problems of change confronting them during the colonial period, from the establishment of British control till the outbreak of the Mau Mau. Impoverishment, given the restricted land area of the reserve, soil depletion, depressions and droughts together with the Hut and Poll Tax and an increase in population, reduced the income earning opportunities in the reserve considerably and contributed to the historically increasing wage participation among the Akamba.
