Abstract:Aim is to examine the Giriama gerontocratic government based on age-sets and elder councils (kambi), and to determine the extent to which the system broke down when the Giriama dispersed from their kaya (a fortified clearing deep in the forest of the Mombasa hinterland) in a rapid, farreaching expansion back to the Sabaki River in the second half of the 19th century. Sections: prelude: origins and adjustments - age-sets - The kambi - secret societies - the process of gerontocracy - dispersal variations. Map, notes, ref., résumé, tables.
