Abstract: | Purpose is to show that considerable development took place in Nyasaland during and despite the world depression of the early 1930s, and that in Nyasaland's case the 1929 Colonial Development Act was more beneficial than is often believed. The article describes how the manpower and skills required for development were retained or acquired in this period and how capital was obtained. Development was concentrated on road improvements, medical and sanitation facilities and on education. Notes, tables. |
