Abstract:Description of the geography and economy of the Mesewa area from the sixteenth century onwards on the basis of contemporary accounts by various European travellers and missionaries. The description includes an account of the rise of Monkulu, some six or so kilometres inland from the coast, and Otumlo, half way between it and the coast, during the early or mid-nineteenth century as satellites of the town of Mesewa, sources of much of the latter's drinking water and places of refuge where the wealthier citizens of the port went to escape its torrid and oppressive climate. The geography of the port was also significantly transformed by a period of Egyptian rule beginning in 1865, Egyptian innovations including the piping of water from Monkulu to Tewuläd island by means of a 400-yard-long causeway. Maps, notes.
