Abstract:The Rokel River region comprises that portion of Sierra Leone bordering the Rokel River and its important tributaries. In this region is situated the Sierra Leone peninsula on which Freetown stands. Particular attention is paid to that portion of the river - the 135 mile stretch from the coast inland - which is navigable. The region extends as far north as the Small Scarcies River and as far south as the Bumpe and Ribi districts. The tide-water trading centres in the region, like Kambia, Mange Bure, Port Loko, Magbeli, Senehun and others are of particular interest as centres of trade, politics and other activities. Freetown, of course, is in a class by itself. The major Sierra Leone peoples involved in the trade and politics of the Rokel region during the period under review were the Tembe (the most important), the Loko, the Susu, the Mende, the Bulom-Sherbro and the Freetown settlers. The eighteenth century, particularly the latter half, was for the Rokel River region a period of important developments. Map, ref.
