Abstract:Analysis of total factor productivity in Nigerian manufacturing industries in the years 1962 through 1980 with particular emphasis on the trend, causal factors and the policies promoting it. The movements of output, and of factor services of capital and labour are first discussed, followed by a discussion of the indexes of output, input and total factor productivity. A total productivity trend equation is then estimated. The author concludes that productivity increases result mainly from intangible investments such as research and development, education and training, health, safety, and mobility. At the same time, both the government and the management of industry need to take deliberate steps to ameliorate the effects of technological displacement which are a necessary concomitant of productivity advance.
