Abstract:It is in their songs, more than in any other aspect of their literature, oral or written, that the Swahili have revealed their personal problems, their hopes and wishes. It is in their songs that the complete spectrum of Swahili life and work is displayed. Since a large proportion of the Swahili people are engaged in work at sea the sailors' songs form a greater body of songs than those associated with any other daily activity of the Swahili. The sailors' songs presented here were collected by the author during the years 1959-73 in Pate, Lamu, Siu, Malindi, Mombasa and surrounding villages, Tanga, Bagamoyo, and Dar es Salaam and surrounding villages. - Notes.
