| Abstract: | Despite warnings that it is inappropriate to use the word 'caste' in non-Hindu contexts, numerous Africanists have used the term, with varying degrees of imprecision. In this paper the author first outlines different emphases which have appeared in the literature concerning caste in India; then he discusses several examples of hierarchical systems in Africa which have been described as 'caste'. Finally, he focusses upon his fieldwork data concerning the Dime of South-West Ethiopia, amongst whom there operates a system which can be unequivocally labelled caste. Sections: Caste as an Indian phenomenon - Caste in Africa (Nadel's evidence; Rwanda; the Gurage; the Konso; the Dime; summary of caste in Dimam) - Conclusion. Ref., notes, tables, French summary. |
