| Abstract: | The fiscal crisis of the Ivorian State which occured at the end of the 1970s serves as a starting point for the analysis of the contradictions in the patterns of accumulation which have characterized the political economy of the country. During the first fifteen years of independence there appeared to be complimentarity between the activities of export agriculture and industrial sectors, but the increasing subordination of the export sector to the needs of the industrial sector by the late 1970s and the new lines of social differentiation which emerged as part of this process revealed the limits of this pattern of accumulation.
