| Abstract: | The author hopes to show through a brief discussion of ethnographic data from Southern Dahomey in which developmental processes are emphasized that the social structural category 'voluntary association' lacks definitional rigor. Since there is even some question as to the real content of such a category, it surely obscures significant features and variations in the institutions so labelled. Specifically, the author discusses the often-mentioned Dahomean dokpe in relation to certain key changes in Dahomean social organization during a three hundred year period.
