| Abstract: | Recent works on Zaire, and Africa, stress how political power is used to gain control of the economy rather than that the state is controlled from a base in the economy. In Kisangani, however, emerged a small commercial middle class of entrepreneurs, who do not owe their success to their political position. This paper shows how these entrepreneurs achieved success in a system in which the economic sector is so dominated by the political. It is shown that particular historical events and economic circumstances have permitted the emergence of this small commercial middle class. Bibliogr., notes, tab. |
