| Abstract: | The primary interest of the author is to look at the concept of 'liberalism' as it has been regarded and understood in Rhodesia, to examine the meaning of the word in the Rhodesian context and to demonstrate the resilience of the Rhodesian variant in its function as window-dressing to buy off the Imperial Government and British humanitarian groups in favour of settler demands for greater autonomy, and in its function of stigmatizing white dissidents who oppose traditional white Rhodesian aspirations. In particular the author looks at white Rhodesian 'liberalism', in relation to the many settler attempts at closer union with its neighbours. Primarily he examines its history during the period prior to the formation of the Central African Federation (1953-63) - White Rhodesia's last great play for Dominion status. Notes. |
