| Abstract: | The general belief is that retirement is a crisis situation for most retirees. A review of crisis theory in disciplines such as social casework, medicine and psychology and in social gerontology is followed by a review of available retirement literature in Nigeria and a discussion of the implications for research into the phenomenon of retirement in Nigeria. For most retired public servants in Nigeria retirement can be considered a crisis situation because generally speaking there is an absence of preretirement counselling; retirement leads to loss of functions of work, including loss of self-identity, self-esteem and status; and retirement benefits are not promptly paid. For a few Nigerian retirees retirement is not a crisis because they have prepared in advance for it and perceive it as a challenge. One fundamental question about retirement which cannot be ignored in Nigeria today is that it is not essentially a private issue, but a public one, which should be studied, understood and tackled.
