Abstract: | This article presents the results of a case study of the Big Market in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and thus offers an entree into the social and economic history of both Kriodom and the wider Sierra Leonean society. By focusing on the worksite of one particular group of women, the Krios (Creoles), the paper demonstrates that, while at work, African women dynamically participated in shaping cultural and political developments. With focus on the extra-economic functions which Big Market traders played this paper shows how from the nineteenth to the twentieth century women affected history and were affected by it. Notes. |
