Abstract:This paper attempts to fill a gap in the current scholarship on Africa under colonial rule by examining the attitudes and policies of the Americo-Liberian ruling class towards Liberia's African population in the light of attitudes and policies adopted by European Governments towards African peoples under their rule. Sections: The Americo-Liberian oligarchy - The African peoples of Liberia: the Liberian scramble for Africa and the Liberian Protectorate - Settler-African relations - Liberia's 'native policy' (assimilation; indirect rule) - 'Independence' for Liberia's African population: May 1964, and after. Notes, French summary.
