Abstract: | After reference made to some resolutions of the 'International conference on the organization of research and training in Africa in relation to the study, conservation, and utilization of natural resources' (Lagos, 1964), a backward look is taken at the contrasting scientific policies of Britain, France, Belgium, Portugal. A table shows a summary of differences between Britain and France. Follows a general description of the development and current status of some of the major African research centers, combined with a broad view of the subject fields involved. A list shows currently operating research establishments in Africa, grouped by geographical area: West Africa- West Central Africa - Central Southern Africa - Northeast Africa - East Africa.
