Abstract: | The nationalist reactions among the Bakongo to the Belgian presence, which can be traced back the early twenties, expressed themselves in highly diversified forms and with varying degrees o intensity. From the early days of the Belgian rule the Mekong cultural heritage shows a duality of tendencies; The acceptance of certain Western innovations and a manifest attachment t the Bakongo cultural background. These tendencies account for the presence of modernist and traditional strands discernable in present-day attitudes towards authority. This subject is examined in the chapters; Historical Background; Modern Developments; Factors of Socialization. References, tables, French Summary. |
