Abstract:The project is a large-scale, capital-intensive irrigation scheme designed to cover an area of 58 000 acres in Kano State. It is the first of several such schemes which will eventually cover 146 000 acres. This paper focuses particularly on the stated reasons for introducing irrigation and the specific assumptions which have shaped the design of the project and, in turn, the implications these dicisions have for the present and future rural development in the area.
