| Abstract: | For a long time the Reserve Bank provided the bulk of forward exchange facilities on an administered basis. This system, however, proved to be inefficient, and the Reserve Bank was forced to seek alternative arrangements. The upshot was that in September 1983 a spot/swap system of forward exchange was introduced to replace the previous administered system. The purpose of this article is twofold. Recent changes in forward exchange policy are briefly adumbrated. Thereafter, some of the economic implications of establishing a proper forward exchange market are examined with special reference to exchange control policy in South Africa, and the possible development of an eurorand market.
