Abstract: | Using a sectoral approach, the authors demonstrate that foreign private investment has made substantial contributions to capital formation, output and employment generation in the Nigerian cotton textile industry between 1962 and 1977. This was not without its social costs, however, since there is evidence to suggest that foreign private enterprises displaced indigenous production, in particular the handloom artisan system which was unable to compete with the fine-textured textiles of the factory system.
