Abstract: | Assessed is the extent to which the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) - to foster the intermediation of funds for the benefit of Africans and to extend the availability of commercial credit to rural small-scale operations the Government of Kenya purchased a 60 percent interest in this bank founded in 1971 - has been able to extend credit to rural smallholders and identified are productive activities in the rural sector. Four questions are raised and evaluated in relatio to a sample of KCB loan recipients interviewed in 1976: 1. Do loans reach less-privileged agriculturalists? 2. Does lending activity entail types of loans and screening procedures pertinent for small-scale rural enterprise? 3. Does nonagricultural lending foster productive small-scale enterprise? 4. Does lending suggest a transition toward widespread financial intermediation in rural areas? Notes, tab. |
